Gorman’s Muhammad earns another MVP honor

Bishop Gorman senior Shabazz Muhammad capped his illustrious high school career with flair Saturday.

Muhammad had 20 points and four rebounds to earn his team’s Most Valuable Player award as the West rallied past the East, 99-95 in the Jordan Brand Classic at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday.

Muhammad, a UCLA signee, knocked down a pair of free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining to cap a second-half comeback for the West, which trailed 50-45 at halftime.

The 6-foot-6-inch wing added four rebounds, and threw down four dunks, including a highlight-reel jam that gave the West a 90-79 lead with 5:02 left.

Findlay Prep’s Anthony Bennett, who is considering offers from Florida, Kentucky, Oregon, Washington and UNLV, had seven points and two rebounds for the West. Pilot teammate Brandon Ashley, an Arizona signee, scored two points.

North Carolina State signee Rodney Purvis scored 22 points to lead the East and earn his team’s MVP honor.
