ROUNDUP: Gorman boys rally, hand third-ranked Long Beach Poly (Calif.) its first loss

Bishop Gorman’s boys basketball team opened the fourth quarter with a 15-2 run and held on for a 58-53 victory over Long Beach Poly (Calif.) on Saturday in Santa Ana, Calif.
The Gaels (20-5) trailed 35-30 entering the final period but forced seven fourth-quarter turnovers to help spark the comeback against the Jackrabbits (22-1), ranked No. 3 in the nation by USA Today.
Shabazz Muhammad had 31 points and eight rebounds to lead the Gaels. He hit two free throws with 5:32 to play to give Gorman a 38-37 lead, and the Gaels didn’t trail again.
Gorman was 18-for-19 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
Ben Carter added 11 points and five rebounds, and Demetris Morant had eight points and six boards for Gorman.
Poly struggled offensively against Gorman’s 2-3 zone. The Jackrabbits were just 4-for-26 from the field in the first half. Gorman forced 16 turnovers and turned them into 15 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter.
Lincoln County 90, Calvary Chapel 41 — At Calvary Chapel, Lincoln County senior Dantley Walker set yet another Nevada record, dishing out 22 assists as the Lynx routed the Lions.
Walker, who last month set the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s records for points in a game and points in a career, also had 19 points, seven steals and six rebounds. He also owns state marks for assists in a season and in a career.
The previous record for assists in a game was 21, set by Virgin Valley’s Alex Jensen in 1980 and matched by Walker earlier this season.
Ryan Rippetoe added 29 points and nine rebounds, and Chandler Katschke supplied 16 points and 14 rebounds for Lincoln County, which raced to a 44-16 halftime lead.
Bobby Buist scored 12 points and Joey Peterson 11 for Calvary Chapel.
Agassi Prep 87, Mountain View 71 — At Mountain View, Quincy Brown tallied 28 points and 15 rebounds, and the Stars used a 23-13 third-quarter burst to build a 58-38 lead and hold off the Saints.
DeMadjeo Simon added 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Kalinn Jackson scored 12 for Agassi Prep, which got 10 points from Curtis Watson.
Justyn Anderson led Mountain View with 44 points. Mathew Larson chipped in nine points and nine rebounds for the Saints.
Needles 64, Lake Mead 34 — At Needles, Calif., Michael Hills had 18 points and nine rebounds to help the Mustangs tame the Eagles.
Aaron Burns added 14 points and nine rebounds for Needles, which took control with a 19-7 run in the second quarter.
Caleb Pitman led Lake Mead with 11 points, and teammate L.J. Yamzon scored 10.
Pahranagat Valley 46, Beatty 27 — At Alamo, Cody Hosier poured in 27 points as the Panthers clinched no worse than a share of the Class 1A Southern League regular season crown.
Hosier scored 11 points in the first quarter as the Panthers grabbed a 19-8 lead. He added all 13 of Pahranagat Valley’s points in the fourth quarter to finish off the win.
Ramiro Hernandez paced Beatty with eight points.
GIRLS
The Meadows 39, Laughlin 30 — At The Meadows, Melaney Mayes scored five of her nine points in the final minute to lift the Mustangs past the Cougars.
The Meadows, which until this week hadn’t won a game since the 2007-08 season, has wins in two of its past three games and captured its first league victory in more than four years.
Claudia Close had nine points and Amber Peterson eight for the Mustangs.
Kay Van led Laughlin with 12 points.
Needles 40, Lake Mead 33 — At Needles, Calif., Gena Chavira scored 21 points to lead the Mustangs past the Eagles.
Chavira had 11 points in the first half to help Needles to a 15-11 lead.
Colleen Zumaran paced Lake Mead with 10 points.
Lincoln County 41, Calvary Chapel 27 — At Calvary Chapel, Melanie Florence poured in 20 points, and the Lynx used an 18-7 second-quarter run to take a 25-9 halftime lead and cruise past the Lions.
Marissa Bonnefin led Calvary Chapel with nine points.
Mountain View 42, Agassi Prep 26 — At Mountain View, Briana Marruffo registered 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals as the Saints battled back from a 17-16 halftime deficit to top the Stars.
Patrice Marshall added 14 points for Mountain View, which outscored Agassi Prep 18-5 in the fourth quarter. Jordan Davison had seven rebounds for the Saints.
Alannah Conway led the Stars with 11 points.
Pahranagat Valley 69, Beatty 38 — At Alamo, Halie Lewis racked up 19 points, eight steals and eight rebounds as the Panthers clinched at least a share of the Class 1A Southern League regular season title.
Dakota Day added 14 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots, and Kimberly Lewis supplied 13 points and 10 rebounds for Pahranagat Valley, which got eight assists from Alyssa Higbee.
Amber Ibarra scored 14 points and Kaitlin Ulrich 10 for Beatty.
