GATOR CLASSIC: Rancho gets defensive in win over Silverado

Rancho's girls basketball team didn't need a detailed scouting report Monday night.

After getting torched by Silverado's Deja Siaki only 11 days ago, the Rams made sure to avoid a repeat performance.

Using a box-and-one defense on Siaki, Rancho limited the senior guard to 10 points and rolled to a 42-24 victory to finish unbeaten in pool play at the Gator Winter Classic at Green Valley.

"(Siaki) destroyed us last game," Rancho coach Ashley Vossen said. "We know how great of a shooter she is, so we had our defense centered around trying to slow her down. If we could slow her down, then everything else would fall into place for us."

Siaki had 24 points in Silverado's 64-57 win over Rancho on Dec. 17. With Alyssa Burt and Ashlynn McCall shadowing Siaki, the senior guard was limited to three points in the first half as the Rams took a 25-9 lead.

The Skyhawks were held scoreless in the second quarter and went nearly 14 minutes of game time without scoring.

Siaki finally broke Silverado's scoring drought with 3:54 remaining in the third quarter when she went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line to cut Rancho's lead to 31-10.

Lyric Knight led Silverado with 11 points.

"I'm very happy with our defense," Vossen said. "We are a very small team. We're very undersized. Our goal is to play good defense, and if we can keep them in front of us and limit them to one shot, that's successful for us."

Maureen Macato led Rancho with 16 points, and teammate Tatianna Lee added 13 points.

Lee finished off a fast break with a buzzer-beating layup to put Rancho on top 17-9 at the end of the first quarter, and McCall scored the final four points of the first half to give the Rams a 14-point advantage at the break.

Lee scored on a reverse layup after a nice pass from Macato to extend Rancho's lead to 41-20 with 5:44 left in the fourth quarter.

Silverado never got closer than 16 points in the second half.

"It's a good feeling to go 3-0 in our pool," Vossen said. "All of this is preparation for conference. Everyone knows that our conference ridiculously hard. We have Foothill and Green Valley the first week, so we're trying to prepare for that."

Green Valley 77, El Segundo (Calif.) 63 — Ellee Barton had 19 points, and Yamilei Rodriguez added 15 points as the Gators topped the Eagles and finished atop their pool with an unblemished record.
