Mojave-Canyon Springs girls game stopped because of fight

The Mojave at Canyon Springs girls basketball game on Monday was halted in the third quarter because of a fight between the teams.

Pioneers coach Chris Walker said that with the Pioneers leading 33-30, Mojave's Charleea Armstrong was the recipient of a hard foul and retaliated by throwing a punch at a Canyon Springs player.

The players on the floor came together, but were separated and sent to their benches by coaches and officials.

A second fight broke out behind the team benches, and police officers and coaches broke up the fight. Officials halted the game at that point.

A decision on the outcome of the game will not be made until after Southern Nevada Officials Association commissioner Marc Ratner and Clark County School District officials review video and game reports. It's likely that both teams will forfeit the game and possible that players involved will have to sit out their team's next game or that Mojave and Canyon Springs each would have to forfeit the next game. Mojave hosts Clark on Wednesday. Canyon Springs hosts Liberty on Thursday.

The boys game between the schools was not played because of safety concerns.
