In a game that had all the suspense of a historical re-enactment, O’Bannon had 19 of his 26 points in the first quarter as the Gaels rolled to an 83-63 win over Coronado for the Division I state title at UNR’s Lawlor Events Center. It was the fifth consecutive large-school state title for Gorman (25-7).
Coronado (21-4) won its first Sunrise Region title last week and will play in the state tournament for the first time when they meet Northern Region champ Carson (24-4) in the Division I semifinals at 8 p.m. Thursday at UNR’s Lawlor Events Center.
Before I can graduate, there’s some basketball to discuss. The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association boys and girls state tournaments are in Reno this week, and I took a break from writing my book about the 2015 football season (“The Year of the Butt Punt”) to make the trip north and check out all the action.

Jake DesJardins had 31 points and 11 rebounds Wednesday to lead Coronado’s boys basketball team to a 73-50 win over Agoura (Calif.) in the championship game of the Kiwanis Invitational in Ventura, Calif.
