Carter, Stars shoot to first playoff win

Tank Carter ran for three touchdowns Saturday to lead Agassi Prep (7-2) to a 62-30 win over The Meadows in a Class 2A quarterfinal at Rancho.

“We hope to build from this,” said Agassi Prep coach Colt Goodman, whose team won its first playoff game in school history. “We are very proud of these players.”
Carter had TD rushes of 16, 20 and 29 yards, finishing with 82 yards on 10 carries.
The Stars wasted little time, driving 54 yards in six plays on the game’s opening drive, which was capped by Terrell Kemp’s 31-yard TD pass to DeVonn Porter.
Porter tacked on a 3-yard scoring run on the Stars’ next possession, then later scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter to finish with 151 yards on 21 carries.
The Meadows quarterback Garrett Gosse did all he could to keep the game close, rushing for 65 yards on 13 carries, including 12-, 1- and 4-yard TD runs.
Gosse also completed 21-of-41 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown.
After the Mustangs fell behind 38-24 in the third quarter, Gosse hit Richard Lee for an 8-yard TD strike and followed it with a two-point conversion to Max Newman.
The Meadows (5-5) then recovered an onside kick to begin their next drive on the Stars’ 38-yard line. Gosse ended the 10-play drive with a 4-yard keeper to get the Mustangs to within eight points, but would get no closer.
“Even when the game got close, they stayed focused and mistakes were minimized,” Goodman said.
The Stars’ defense tightened up in the fourth quarter and intercepted Gosse three times, including LeShaun Sims’ 68-yard interception return for a touchdown, and a late score by Carter gave the momentum back to Agassi Prep, who will host Pershing County in a 2A semifinal Nov. 13 at 1 p.m.
