Del Sol’s Reed carries Sunrise to All-Star win
Dezerick Reed was a workhorse running back at Del Sol last season, guiding the Dragons to the Sunrise Region title.
It was more of the same for Reed in the 39th West Charleston Lions Club High School All-Star Game on Saturday night.
Reed carried 16 times for 65 yards and a touchdown to propel the Sunrise seniors to a 20-9 victory over their Sunset counterparts at Bishop Gorman.
“It’s an all-star game; I wasn’t really worried about carries,” said Reed, who hopes to walk on to UNLV. “I wanted to come out and have fun. It felt good to get back into pads and run around a little.”
Reed, last year’s Gatorade Nevada Player of the Year, was named the game’s Overall Most Valuable Player.
“It’s an honor,“ Reed said of the MVP award. “Hard work really pays off.“
Silverado’s Trenton Tipton returned a second-quarter interception 25 yards to the Sunset 5-yard line, and Reed plowed up the middle on the next play to give the Sunrise a 20-0 lead 5:25 before halftime.
Palo Verde running back Tyrone Blake, a Southern Utah signee, was named Offensive MVP after rushing for 35 yards on eight attempts for the Sunset.
Desert Pines linebacker Keorris Berry of the Sunrise was named Defensive MVP.
Coronado quarterback R.J. Newton passed for 69 yards for the Sunrise, including a 35-yard touchdown to Del Sol’s Evan Weinstock down the left sideline in the first quarter.
Green Valley kicker Nolan Kohorst, a UNLV signee, connected on field goals of 32 and 26 yards for the Sunrise.
Bonanza linebacker Franz Ferguson had a safety in the second quarter, and the Sunset added its touchdown with 7:42 to play on a 27-yard pass from Legacy’s Devin Wiedemann to Cimarron-Memorial’s Tim Hasson, who made a diving grab in the end zone.
