FOOTBALL: Morris provides punch as Desert Pines tops Chaparral
September 19, 2015 - 1:50 am
Desert Pines football coach Tico Rodriguez had countless scoring weapons at his disposal Friday night, but the only one he really needed was Isaiah Morris.
Morris, a junior running back, rushed 11 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns to lead the fourth-ranked Jaguars to a 60-13 home win over Chaparral. He added a third score on a reception from Marckell Grayson, and another on a long kickoff return.
"Isaiah has been with me two years now," Rodriguez said. "I'm just accustomed to him making spectacular plays. I really think he's the best play-maker in the city."
The Jaguars (4-0, 2-0 Sunrise League) scored their first touchdown early when Tony Fields dove on a Chaparral fumble in the end zone.
Morris took over from there, scoring on a 29-yard pass from Grayson later in the first quarter. He had TD runs of 16 and 37 yards in the second quarter, and found the end zone on an 85-yard kick return with 2:10 to go in the first half.
Quarterback Andrew Solis helped Chaparral (2-2, 1-1) grab brief momentum with a pair of touchdown passes midway through the second quarter, but the Cowboys still trailed 40-13 after Vasa Hansell scored on a 7-yard pass from Grayson just before halftime.
"We came out and imposed our will," Rodriguez said. "Our offensive line established the run early. We made some mistakes, but we cleaned things up in the second half."
The Jaguars, who finished with 474 yards of offense, maintained momentum in the third quarter with a 7-yard Grayson run and a 3-yard pass from Grayson to Trevor Nofoa to make it 52-13. Randal Grimes capped Desert Pines' night with a 21-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter.
"We're getting there," Rodriguez said of the win. "We're still a work in progress. We've got to clean some things up, but we're getting there."
Nofoa carried 12 times for 75 yards, and caught three passes for 49 yards. Grayson helped the Jaguars by completing 11 of 24 passes for 151 yards.
Solis completed 7 of 17 passes for 94 yards to lead Chaparral.
Spring Valley 22, Clark 15 — At Clark, Avery Dawson scored on a 3-yard rush with 1:37 left in the fourth quarter to lift the Grizzlies (3-1, 1-1 Sunset) over the Chargers (2-2, 0-2).
Clark tied the game with 8:36 to play when Semaj Taylor scored on a 1-yard run and Nick Kinnard hit Ryan Cooper in the back of the end zone for a 2-point conversion to make it 15-15.
A short punt set up the winning drive, as Spring Valley took over at the Clark 35. K.C. Moore, who completed 15 of 27 passes for 130 yards, provided a key 23-yard option run on third-and-1 from Clark's 26-yard line before Dawson's score.
Moore tossed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Antony Vazquez and a 30-yard strike to Nicholas Caifano to put Spring Valley up 13-0 at the half.
Kinnard hooked up with Amir Boone on a 29-yard TD pass over the middle to cap Clark's opening drive of the second half and cut the lead to 13-7.
Spring Valley's defensive end Joseph Pienta tackled Kinnard who chased down a high snap in the end zone early in the fourth quarter for a safety and a 15-7 lead.
Boone recovered a fumble on the Grizzlies' next possession after Jordan Strong stripped Moore, to set up the Chargers on Spring Valley's 41-yard line.
Clark took advantage of an offsides penalty on a fourth-and-2 play on that drive, and capped it five plays later with Taylor's TD run.
Pienta had an interception and two sacks, and Clark's Brendon Jackson supplied two sacks and seven tackles.
Faith Lutheran 40, Cheyenne 22 — At Cheyenne, the Crusaders rallied from a slow start to down the Desert Shields.
For almost a full half, Cheyenne controlled Faith Lutheran, leading 14-7, and holding the Crusaders to 18 yards of offense. Then, with a minute to play in the second quarter, things went south for the Desert Shields as Faith defensive back Robby Schwartz tipped a Cheyenne pass to Cole Thomas for an interception and the Crusaders capitalized with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Brenden Joyce to Alec Netski with 39 seconds left in the half.
Turnovers were the story all night for Cheyenne (2-2, 1-1 Sunset League). The Desert Shields' first drive lasted one play -- a fumble recovered by Netski. Two Faith Lutheran drives later, the Desert Shields forced a punt but fumbled to give the Crusaders a second chance. After limiting Faith Lutheran to a field goal on that opportunity, the Desert Shields were flagged for roughing the kicker, setting up a 2-yard Saundre Spiller TD instead.
Faith Lutheran (3-1, 2-0) followed its late first-half TD with three straight scores to start the second half. Christian Marshall — held to 22 yards on 10 carries in the first half — warmed up to finish with 160 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Las Vegas got off to a quick start, with the first of Perez's touchdowns coming on a 52-yard catch and run less than two minutes into the game.
Hicks added his 11-yard TD run in the first minute of the second quarter.
Broadhead then hit Rabago for a touchdown from 30 yards just before the half, followed by a fumble deep in Spartan territory gave them one more chance for a touchdown, with Perez catching his second score from 16 yards out with 20 seconds left in the half.
In the second half, the Spartans struck back, with Tyree Riley scoring on an 8-yard run to open the second-half scoring. Riley was effective throughout the night for Cimarron, rushing for 194 yards on 37 carries.
Matlock, in relief for Broadhead, threw a 31-yard touchdown to Rabago on fourth down to give Las Vegas a 34-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.
A muffed punt soon gave Cimarron a short field, which George Tribble used to score from 1-yard out.

"I had some big holes today, I thought our line really handled their business up front," McClinton said.
Flowers tossed a 45-yard TD pass to Jaden Mitchell with 23 seconds left in the third quarter to cap the scoring for Desert Oasis, which eclipsed last season's win total of two.
"We laid an egg last week," said Desert Oasis coach Brad Talich, whose team lost to Basic 50-0 last week. "But I was really proud of how we came back tonight."
