Lucero’s six TDs power Coronado to romp over Silverado in opener

Kevin Lucero threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score Thursday night to lead Coronado’s football team to a 41-17 victory at Silverado in the season opener for both teams.

The senior quarterback completed 12 of 18 passes for 202 yards. He ran 4 yards for the game’s first score and then hit Kjell Henness on a 7-yard scoring pass and fellow senior wide receiver Cody Mucino for a 61-yard TD to give the Cougars a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

Jackson Cofer caught scoring passes of 43 and 30 yards from Lucero in the second quarter to bump the lead to 34-0 at the half.

"What we were able to do tonight is get our quick kids on the field, and that's kind of what we saw on tape is what we needed to do," Coronado coach Brad Talich said. "And I think Kevin did a good job spreading the ball to a lot of the wideouts."

After the Skyhawks got on the board with a safety early in the third quarter, Lucero found Mucino for a 5-yard touchdown pass.

The Cougars also added 133 yards rushing, with running back Evan Cooper leading the way with seven carries for 49 yards.

"The staff worked extremely hard and made a commitment, and the kids made a commitment in the summer learning the new system," Talich said. "It paid off tonight. It was nice to see them achieve some success on offense. The fruits of their labor were seen tonight."

Silverado running back Alex Cater had a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs in the fourth quarter. Cater rushed 38 times for 198 yards as the Skyhawks ran 50 times for 224 yards and completed 2 of 7 passes for 3 yards.
