Quick start helps Moapa Valley top Desert Pines in Sunrise showdown

Kaleb Bodily ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, and No. 9 Moapa Valley scored twice before Desert Pines even touched the ball Thursday as the Pirates posted a 27-13 home win over the Jaguars in the showdown for the Division I-A Sunrise League title.

Moapa Valley (9-0, 5-0 Sunrise) recovered its own opening kickoff and converted on a 28-yard pass from Zach Hymas to Jeremy Waite.

The Pirates recovered the next kickoff and scored on an 11-yard run by Bodily. Jared Repp’s 4-yard scoring run later in the quarter gave Moapa Valley a 20-0 lead.

"The early lead was huge," said Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis, who collected his 100th career win. "We started well, and then I thought we relaxed a bit, but we ball-controlled them well."

Repp finished with 141 yards on 24 carries as the Pirates racked up 418 yards of offense on 71 plays and limited Desert Pines (8-1, 4-1) to 165 yards on 35 plays.

The Jaguars closed to within 20-13 on TD runs of 1 and 13 yards by Iquan Corsey in the second quarter, but a 13-yard TD run by Bodily in the third quarter closed the scoring.
