Playoffs set (and clean) for regional matchups

Plenty of soccer coaches and a media member or two spent several hours this week figuring out potential tiebreakers that might determine seeds or even which teams advanced to the Class 4A boys playoffs.

 

It turns out that time could have been spent doing something else.

 

For all the potential ties that could have taken place in the standings in the Sunrise and Sunset Regions, none actually materialized.

 

After Wednesday’s results, everything is clean. No ties to be broken. No loopholes to seek.

 

Here’s a look at how each league broke down and the regional quarterfinal matchups for Tuesday.

 

It wouldn’t be the Northeast League without one more lead change on the final day of the season.

 

Las Vegas’ win over Sunrise Mountain, coupled with Valley’s heartbreaking tie against Chaparral, put the defending state champions into the penthouse on the final day.

 

Las Vegas (30 points) earned the top seed while Valley (29) was relegated to second place.

 

Eldorado lost a stunner to Desert Pines to stay at 27 points.

 

Chaparral (25) claimed the final spot.

 

All four playoff-bound teams held the Northeast lead for at least one day in October.

 

Tech’s 1-0 win over Liberty on Wednesday was good enough to keep the Roadrunners (34) in the top spot in the league.

 

Green Valley (33) lost only one league match all season, but had to settle for second place.

 

Coronado (26) is third, followed by Silverado (21).

 

Quarterfinal matchups

At Bettye Wilson Park on Tuesday, it’ll be: Coronado vs. Valley, and Eldorado vs. Green Valley at 4 p.m.; and Silverado vs. Las Vegas, and Chaparral vs. Tech at 6 p.m. Semifinals are Nov. 5 with the championship set for Nov. 7.

The only mystery left in this league before Wednesday was whether Cimarron-Memorial would get in and if the Spartans would climb to third.

 

Yes and yes.

 

Cimarron’s 5-0 win over Shadow Ridge put the Spartans into the field.

 

Centennial (46) had first place locked up since last week.

 

Palo Verde (40) is the No. 2 seed.

 

Cimarron (26) nosed out Arbor View (25) for third, leaving the Aggies in fourth.

 

Bishop Gorman led from gate to wire in the Southwest and never let its foot off of the gas pedal, finishing with a perfect 48 points.
Clark (35) finished second.

 

Bonanza (30) vaulted into third place with a win over Sierra Vista on Wednesday, and Western (29) claimed the fourth spot.

 

On Tuesday at Bettye Wilson Park, it’ll be: Bonanza vs. Palo Verde, and Cimarron vs. Clark at 4 p.m.; and Western vs. Centennial, and Arbor View vs. Bishop Gorman at 6 p.m. The semifinals are Nov. 5 with the championship set for Nov. 7.
