LAS VEGAS KICK-OFF: Kornieck’s late goal sends Cougar girls past Arbor View

Coronado's girls soccer team maintained control and was ahead of Arbor View for most of the match Saturday afternoon.

But the Cougars still needed some late heroics from one of the state's best players after surrendering an equalizer in the 75th minute.

Taylor Kornieck scored the go-ahead goal with one minute remaining to give the Cougars a 3-2 win over Arbor View in the championship match of the Las Vegas Kick-Off at Faith Lutheran.

"We had to get that (goal). I was not going into overtime," Kornieck said. "And I know nobody else wanted to. I knew it was going in once I faked the defender out."

Kornieck, a University of Colorado signee, scored all three of her team's goals in a rematch of last season's Division I state final, which ended in a 6-0 Arbor View win.

The senior made sure the Cougars (4-0-1) had a better showing this time around.

After receiving a ball from Olivia Meza, Kornieck shook an Arbor View defender before sending a shot inside the far right post with her left foot, giving the Cougars a 3-2 lead.

"It was an exciting moment," Coronado coach Dana Neel said. "This team doesn't shut down. As long as they continue to keep working all the way until the end, they'll have their finishes and exciting moments. This team never quits, and we're getting results because of their hard work."

Arbor View's Madison Boyd tied the game at 2-2 with five minutes left on a 35-yard free kick.

Kornieck headed in the game's first goal off a corner kick from Meza in the fourth minute. The two linked up again on another header off a corner kick in the 14th minute to give Coronado a 2-1 lead.

"I make the same run every single time, and she always just finds my head," Kornieck said of Meza. "I'm the tallest one on the field, so it helps."

Added Neel: "It's something we've worked on, and it's one of the weapons that we will use. We want to vary our attack, but today it was off corners."

Deja Erickson scored an early goal for Arbor View (4-1-1), when she picked up a deflected ball off Coronado goalkeeper Rachel Morris and sent it to the back of the net to tie the game at 1.

Neel said she was pleased how her team played all week, but there's still work left to be done.

"This tells me that we have a solid foundation to build on," she said. "We're not where we want to be. All teams are working out kinks, but we have a foundation and we'll progress from here."

Palo Verde 3, Green Valley 0 — At Green Valley, Jadyn Nogues had two goals and an assist to lead the Panthers by the Gators.
