Coronado’s Victoria Estrada shot 1-under-par 71 Tuesday to win the individual title by five strokes and lead the Cougars to the team title at the Class 4A girls state Tuesday afternoon at the Eagle Valley West Golf Course in Carson City.
It was Joe Sawaia’s Coronado Cougars who best navigated the difficult conditions in the first round of the Class 4A girls state golf tournament Monday afternoon, leading by 16 strokes despite posting their highest score of the season at 317. Bishop Gorman was second at 333, with Palo Verde third at 360.
Palo Verde’s Annick Haczkiewicz carded a record 9-under-par 63 on Monday at Siena Golf Club to earn medalist honors and overshadow Bishop Gorman winning its fourth straight Sunset Region title.
For the first time in several seasons, the outcome of the Sunset Region tournament won’t be a foregone conclusion as four talented teams will be in contention when play begins at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Siena Golf Club.
