Reece Thornton ran for 117 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries as Pahranagat Valley won its 21st state football championship with a 28-14 victory Friday night.
Bishop Gorman and Liberty will meet for the Desert Region championship Friday night. The Mountain Region semifinals match Palo Verde-Centennial and Arbor View-Desert Pines.
The Desert Shields scored 22 unanswered points and had three chances to take the lead in the fourth quarter but dropped a 35-30 decision to Fernley on Saturday.
Kamry Bailey had 18 kills, 12 digs and three blocks, and the Eagles cruised past the Pirates. The Meadows (2A Southern) and Pahranagat (1A Region II) also won regionals.
The Panthers (24-3, 9-0 Mountain League) have a two-game lead over Centennial, Rancho and Shadow Ridge with four matches remaining in the regular season.
The Eagles will host a 20-team field in the Boulder City Invitational, a week after ranking as the highest valley finisher in the Durango Fall Classic.
Bishop Gorman, Boulder City, The Meadows and Pahranagat Valley won the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s OneNevada Cup for the 2018-19 school year.
Sparked by individual wins from Rome Odunze and Kyu Kelly, the Gaels wrapped up their second consecutive Class 4A title by scoring 99 points.
Centennial ran away with its ninth straight Class 4A team championship. The Bulldogs scored 126 points. Runners-up Carson and Sierra Vista each had 54.
Isiah Jones scored from first when Lucas Vandever’s double to left field was misplayed with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Thunderbirds a 4-3 victory.
After falling behind 10-3, the Panthers scored four runs in the third and six in the fourth to take the lead and never looked back.
Mason Thornock went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI and tossed a five-hit shutout to help Lincoln County return to the Class 2A state championship game with a 10-0 win over Yerington in the winners’ bracket final at The Meadows.
