Final question mark in Sunset’s Southwest League plagues girls volleyball regional matchups
October 28, 2009 - 2:36 pm
Volleyball teams on one side of the Las Vegas valley know their playoff fate.
In the Sunset Region, almost everything has been cleared up, but two Thursday matches will determine the remainder of the Class 4A postseason schedule.
After Wednesday’s action in the Sunrise Region, the eight playoff teams have been determined and quarterfinal matches for Tuesday are set, pending confirmation from the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.
Here’s a breakdown of the four leagues heading into the final night of regular season play.
Sunrise Region
Northeast League
Las Vegas is back to its normal spot atop the league after settling for fourth place due to some forfeits last year.
The Wildcats (14-0 in the Northeast) finished a perfect league campaign Wednesday and have earned the league’s No. 1 seed.
Valley (12-2) is the No. 2 seed for the first time since 2001.
Rancho (9-5) secured the No. 3 seed, with Eldorado (8-6) claiming the No. 4 spot.
Southeast League
Silverado needed to win only two games against Green Valley on Wednesday to clinch the Southeast’s No. 1 seed.
The Skyhawks (14-0) did that one better, downing the Gators to win the league title outright.
Green Valley (12-2) is the No. 2 seed.
Coronado (10-4) claims the No. 3 spot.
Basic, despite a loss to Coronado on Wednesday, held on to finish in fourth at 6-8.
Quarterfinal matchups
On Tuesday, Basic will visit Las Vegas; Coronado travels to Valley; Rancho is at Green Valley; and Eldorado is at Silverado.
Semfinals are Nov. 5 at Silverado with the championship match set for Nov. 6, also at Silverado.
Sunset Region
Northwest League
One league match still remains for a handful of teams in the Northwest, but the playoff spots are all settled.
Palo Verde (15-1) won the league outright and is the No. 1 seed.
Centennial (13-2) will be the No. 2 seed as it swept third-place Faith Lutheran (13-3).
Shadow Ridge (9-6) claimed the final spot.
Southwest League
Here’s where the only question mark remains, and it’s about placement, not whether or not a team gets in.
Bishop Gorman (15-0) will be the top seed from the league.
Sierra Vista (13-2) has clinched the No. 2 seed.
Bonanza and Pahrump Valley both are 10-5 and have clinched a playoff spot.
In short, Bonanza has to beat Sierra Vista on Thursday to get the No. 3 seed.
Regardless of Pahrump Valley’s outcome against Spring Valley, if the Bengals win, they’re the No. 3 seed. If they lose, Pahrump would be the No. 3 and Bonanza the No. 4.
Quarterfinal matchups
On Tuesday, the Southwest’s No. 4 seed will visit Palo Verde; the Southwest’s No. 3 seed will be at Centennial; Faith Lutheran travels to Sierra Vista; and Shadow Ridge visits Bishop Gorman.
