RANCHO HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST EVENT FOR KIDS WITH DISABILITIES

Rancho High School, 1900 Searles Ave., plans to host the Paralympic Sport Activity Night for students with disabilities from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome to attend the free program, which will allow them an opportunity to compete in sports.

The Clark County School District plans to host monthly events throughout the school year.

AUTHOR PLANS FREE SEMINAR ABOUT PAYING FOR COLLEGE

Ben Kaplan, author of "How to Go to College Almost for Free" and founder of cityofcollegedreams.org, plans to host a free seminar for students and parents about paying for college from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Lowden Theatre at Las Vegas Academy, 315 S. Seventh St.

The seminar will address how to find, apply for and win college scholarships, as well as maximizing financial aid and free tuition credits.

GOODFELLAS BAR & RESTAURANT TO HOST BENEFIT FOR PROJECT 150

Goodfellas Bar & Restaurant, 2801 N. Tenaya Way, plans to host The Breakfast Club at 7 p.m. Saturday to benefit Project 150, a local nonprofit group that helps homeless and displaced students at 17 area high schools.

The event is free and includes a live band, a raffle and a silent auction. Attendees are encouraged to donate nonperishable breakfast items such as cereal and granola bars.

LAS VEGAS ACADEMY TO HOST PERFORMING ARTS COLLEGE FAIR

Las Vegas Academy, 315 S. Seventh St., is scheduled to host the Las Vegas Performing and Visual Arts College Fair from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24.

The event is free and open to the public.

The National Association for College Admission Counseling is sponsoring the event to allow college-bound students to meet with admission representatives from colleges, universities, studios, festivals and other educational institutions with visual and performing arts programs. Students will learn about admission and financial aid, portfolio days, auditions, student life and more.

MGM ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR TEACHER RECOGNITION PROGRAM

MGM Resorts International is accepting nominations for its Teacher of the Game Recognition Program. All licensed Clark County School District teachers are eligible to be nominated, and 17 will be selected to attend a University of Nevada, Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels men's basketball home game this season. Other prizes will also be awarded, including $500 each for their classrooms.

Teachers nominated should demonstrate excellence in the classroom, motivation, creativity and dedication.

Nominations are due Oct. 1.

CANYON SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST COLLEGE READINESS WORKSHOP

Canyon Springs High School, 350 E. Alexander Road in North Las Vegas, plans to host a fall college readiness educational workshop for 10th-, 11th- and 12th-graders and their parents from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 25.

Presentations regarding scholarships, financial aid and additional college readiness information will be offered.

SPARK! POETRY CONTEST OPEN TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

Clark County high school students are invited to enter the Spark! poetry contest sponsored by the Vegas Valley Book Festival. Guidelines are available at vegasvalleybook festival.org or at the Nevada Arts Council office at 2755 E. Desert Inn Road, Suite 155. The deadline for submission is at 5 p.m. Oct. 5.

Winners will receive cash prizes of $100, $200 and $300. Students will be judged on their original poems and their recitation at the festival on Nov. 3.

VANDERBURG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECOGNIZED FOR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Vanderburg Elementary School, 2040 Desert Shadow Trail, is one of 269 schools nationwide to receive the Blue Ribbon designation this year by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Blue Ribbon designation is for schools that score in the top 10 percent in state standardized tests while making large gains in scores among minority and at-risk students. Vanderburg was the only school recognized in Nevada.

HIKES PLANNED FOR HOME-SCHOOLERS

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department plans to host a series of educational hikes for home-schooled students this fall. The hikes are open to children 5 to 10 accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The first in the series will cover trail bicycling and hiking etiquette and is scheduled from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at Equestrian Park South, 1200 Equestrian Drive. Participants are asked to bring a bike or a scooter and a helmet.

Registration is required at cityofhenderson.com/parks or at any Henderson recreation center.

Other hikes are scheduled for Oct. 18 and Nov. 8.

AT&T DONATES $178,000 TO CURB HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUTS

The AT&T Aspire program donated $178,000 to Communities In Schools of Nevada Sept. 11 at Canyon Springs High School, 350 E. Alexander Road. The funds will be used to address the high school dropout problem in Nevada.

CISN serves 25,000 students at 40 schools in the state, providing medical and dental care, counseling, food, clothing, tutoring and other services. CISN has on-site, full-time coordinators at each school.

BECKLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECEIVES SUPPLIES FROM NEIGHBORHOOD CASINO

Arizona Charlie's Boulder, 4575 Boulder Highway, donated more than 10,000 school supplies to Beckley Elementary School, 3223 Glenhurst Drive. For the past 10 years, the casino has held annual supplies drives with items being donated by employees. This year's donation was the largest in the company's history.

VEGAS PBS TO HOST FUNDRAISER FOR STUDENT HEALTH PROGRAM

Vegas PBS plans to host its third annual 5K run and one-mile walk to support the Keeping Kids Fit program, which educates students on healthy eating and exercise habits, at 8 a.m. Oct. 6 at Vegas PBS, 3050 E. Flamingo Road.

Registration is set to begin at 6:30 a.m. and is $40 on the day of the race. Early registration is available for $25 by Sept. 28 and $35 by Oct. 4 at vegaspbs.org/kkf5k.
