THE ALEXANDER DAWSON SCHOOL DONATES TO AT-RISK STUDENTS

Faculty and staff members from The Alexander Dawson School, 10845 W. Desert Inn Road, presented shoes and other gifts Dec. 20 to all 800 students at Petersen Elementary School, 3650 Cambridge St. The Alexander Dawson School has helped supply Petersen's food and clothing bank and made other donations this school year.

VEGAS PBS WRITING CONTEST OPEN TO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS

Clark County students in kindergarten through fifth grade can submit their original stories and illustrations as part of Vegas PBS' annual PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. The top submissions will win free enrollment in the 2013 Southern Nevada Writing Project Summer Camp, be published in Vegas PBS Source magazine and receive other prizes. Local winners will also be entered into a national contest. The local contest is sponsored by Easy Student Publishing and the Southern Nevada Writing Project. To enter, visit vegaspbs.org/rtl.

SUMMERLIN CHURCH TO HOST LITERACY PROGRAM WITH PETS

Desert Spring United Methodist Church, 120 N. Pavilion Center Drive, plans to offer a monthly literacy program, Reading With Rascal, beginning Jan. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon and continuing every second Saturday of subsequent months. Members of the church will bring their dogs for children to play with and help them with reading.

RANCHO HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST MATH AND SCIENCE CONFERENCE

Rancho High School, 1900 E. Searles Ave., is scheduled to host the 2013 Southern Nevada Math and Science Conference Jan. 18 and 19 with informational sessions and activities for teachers. Registration is $60. To register, visit snvmath.org/conference.

LAS VEGAS HOSPITALITY ASSOCIATION DONATES TO CORTEZ ELEMENTARY

More than 300 students at Cortez Elementary School, 4245 E. Tonopah Ave., received shoes, clothing, toys and other items Dec. 20 from the Las Vegas Hospitality Association. The LVHA also sponsored a daylong carnival with music, face painting, balloon animals, food and more.

DISCOUNTED STUDENT TICKETS AVAILABLE TO DA VINCI EXHIBIT

"Da Vinci - The Genius," the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition at The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is offering free admission to students 12 or younger with a paid adult through Jan. 27. The exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and tickets are $20 for Nevada residents. Admission for students 13 or older with a valid school ID is $17.

The exhibit is organized by Imagine Exhibitions and features 13 themed areas showcasing more than 200 pieces of artwork and inventions.
