Regents name new president of Great Basin College in Elko

The Board of Regents on Monday named Mark Curtis the new president of Great Basin College in Elko.

Curtis, the vice president for instruction at Alpena Community College in Michigan, was confirmed unanimously. A board committee had recommended him last week after interviews with the top three candidates.

Curtis will earn a base annual salary of $180,000, minus a 2.5 percent pay cut and six days of unpaid leave, which are mandated for all state workers. His pay also includes a $12,000 annual housing allowance, an $8,000 annual car allowance, and a $5,000 annual expense account.

He replaces longtime President Carl Diekhans, who announced his retirement in September. Vice President for Student Services Lynn Mahlberg has been serving as interim president since October.

Curtis has been married for 41 years and has two grown children.

Great Basin College is one of four community colleges in Nevada. It had about 3,300 students this past fall.
