UNR panel votes not to impeach student body chief

RENO — The University of Nevada, Reno’s student body president will keep his position.

The Associated Students of the University of Nevada Senate voted Wednesday not to impeach Jake Pereira.

In April, two months after he was elected president, a majority of the ASUN judicial council issued an opinion calling for a trial to impeach Pereira.

Pereira was accused of lying to students during the campaign when asked if he was a member of Coffin and Keys, a secret society on campus that anonymously publishes newsletters about campus activities each semester.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported several students complained about the sexist and racist tones of the newsletters at Wednesday’s meeting.

But senators voted to end the discussion on whether to hold a trial to impeach Pereira, saying he had learned his lesson.

Pereira has issued a statement expressing regret for his actions.
