RTC to begin data-sharing partnership with traffic app Waze

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada will launch a data-sharing partnership with Waze, a traffic-dodging smartphone application that uses community input to provide real-time road information.

RTC officials will launch the program Friday in conjunction with its Seeing Orange campaign that explains construction-related road closures and restrictions.

Waze, a free smartphone app available through Google Play or the Apple iOS app stores, provides navigation instructions for users, but also factors in traffic and accident information provided by community partners and app users.

The RTC, the Nevada Department of Transportation and the Nevada Highway Patrol oversee the Freeway and Arterial System of Transportation system, which will feed information to Waze. Drivers can also report congestion hands-free through the app to assist other users.
