Chicago police release sketch of dismembered toddler

Chicago police have released a sketch of the toddler whose body parts were found in a lagoon next to a park in the city's West Side. 

"At this point, we've got a lot going on, but we don't know what happened," Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told ABC affiliate WLS on Thursday morning. "A simple fact: a helpless child should never end up in the condition."

A forensic sketch artist drew the composite from the child's head, which was found alongside his or her feet and hands over the weekend. Police this week have been draining the lagoon in Garfield Park in search of the child's torso or any more clues in the case. 

The child's gender is unknown. Police said on Tuesday the child is believed to be a mix-raced or African-American child between the ages of 2 and 3 with dark, curly hair and brown eyes. 

"We do know the dismemberment was post-mortem," McCarthy said. "We are working with the medical examiner to put the DNA into the system."
