New top cop named to lead Nevada Highway Patrol
CARSON CITY — The Nevada Highway Patrol will have a new chief Monday when Deputy Chief Dennis Osborn takes over, Department of Public Safety Director James Wright said Friday.
Osborn joined the department as a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper in November 1992. He climbed the ranks of the patrol before being promoted to captain in 2007 and serving in the Parole and Probation Division of the Department of Public Safety.
He returned to the Highway Patrol about a year later. He was promoted to deputy chief in August and has been the commander of the patrol’s Southern Command in Las Vegas since then.
Osborn will work in Carson City as the 22nd chief of the patrol since the agency was established in 1949. He replaces Troy Abney, who resigned in November after about 20 months in the job.
