OfficeMax sends letter to dad, ‘daughter killed in car crash’
A Chicago-area family is reliving their daughter’s fatal car crash after receiving a letter from OfficeMax addressed to the girl’s father and “Daughter Killed in Car Crash.”
Mike Seay’s 17-year-old daughter, Ashley, was killed along with a friend in April when the teens’ SUV left the road and hit a tree.
Seay told NBC 5 he thinks about his daughter “10,000 times a day,” and receiving a letter addressed in such a way brought the pain of losing her front and center.
“Why would they have that type of information? Why would they need that?” Seay said. “What purpose does it serve anybody to know that?”
He said he contacted an OfficeMax representative, whose manager said “it was impossible, that this can’t be happening.”
OfficeMax eventually addressed what happened in a statement to NBC 5.
“We are deeply sorry that Mr. Seay and his family received this mailing from us, and we are reaching out to Mr. Seay to convey our sincerest apologies on this unfortunate matter,” it said.
The statement also said the letter was the result of a mailing list rented through a third party. OfficeMax said the third party has been contacted in an effort to resolve the issue.
