Las Vegas Democrat Justin Watkins will give up Assembly seat

CARSON CITY — One-term Assemblyman Justin Watkins has announced he will not seek re-election to his District 35 seat next year.

In a statement, the Las Vegas Democrat said Wednesday that family issues take precedence over his continued service in the Legislature.

“I do not think I can simultaneously serve my family, my business, and the people of District 35 to my fullest potential in 2019,” Watkins said.

The 37-year-old was elected in 2016, defeating incumbent Republican Brent Jones by nearly 9 percentage points.

No candidates have announced their intentions to run for the seat in 2018.
