LETTER: Mayors should abide by property tax limits
November 24, 2013 - 12:07 am
To the editor:
In reading the story on property taxes (“Mayors push to amend tax caps,” Tuesday Review-Journal), all three mayors were supportive of a change to the property tax law, and Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen said the city only wants to get back to where it was. Where was that? Back to the times when municipalities spent our tax money like a bunch of drunken sailors on shore leave?
With the official unemployment rate in the state of Nevada still above 9 percent, these officials need to make do, just like the rest of us are doing.
We stupidly listened to state legislators a few years ago, and instead of getting a proposition in the state Constitution to limit the annual increase of property taxes, we listened to their promise to take care of us. The problem with that: they can renege on that promise at any time.
