A ninth-inning rally by the 51s fell short as Las Vegas fell to Tacoma 6-4 in a Pacific Coast League game at Cashman Field on Sunday night.
Dilson Herrera, Darrell Ceciliani and Matt Reynolds hit consecutive singles to lead off the inning against Rainiers closer Danny Farquhar, scoring one run and cutting the deficit to two with runners on first and third base.
Farquhar got out of the jam to record his third save in four opportunities for the Rainiers. He got Johnny Monell to strike out and Zach Lutz to fly out before striking out Brandon Allen to end the game.
Tacoma (53-56) led 6-0 before the 51s got on the board. Dilson Herrera hit a three-run home run with one out in the sixth to cut the lead in half. Herrera had two hits and scored twice for Las Vegas (60-49).
Ramon Flores had three hits, scored three runs and drove in a run for the Rainiers. He had two of Tacoma's five doubles in the win.
Adrian Sampson, who the Mariners acquired in the J.A. Happ trade, allowed three runs over eight innings to win in his first start for the Rainiers.
Las Vegas starter Matt Bowman allowed just two runs in five innings of work and took the loss. Chase Huchingson entered the game in the sixth, but didn't last long. He surrendered four runs, two earned, on two hits and two walks and recorded just one out.
The teams have split the first two games of the four-game series, which continues today at 7:05 p.m.
