Baseball, hot dogs and … soccer highlight Fourth of July TV menu
July 2, 2015 - 6:54 pm
It doesn’t get any more American than baseball and hot dogs, but soccer will highlight the Fourth of July weekend of TV sports.
After enjoying our national pastime and watching Joey Chestnut wolf down an insane amount of hot dogs Saturday in Coney Island, we can feast our eyes on the Women’s World Cup final between the United States and Japan at 4 p.m. Sunday on Fox (5).
The Americans will be looking to avenge their loss to Japan in the 2011 World Cup final — in which they blew two leads before losing on penalty kicks — and capture their first World Cup title since 1999.
The U.S., seeking to become the first three-time Women’s World Cup champion, gained a measure of revenge in 2012, when it beat Japan for the Olympic gold medal.
The second-ranked Americans, who knocked off top-ranked Germany 2-0 in the semifinals, are a minus-250 favorite to win outright over Japan and a minus-120 favorite on the 90-minute line.
FRIDAY
PGA Tour, The Greenbrier Classic, second round (1 p.m., TGC (339): Tiger Woods fired a 4-under 66 in Thursday’s first round for his lowest score in an official PGA Tour round in 16 months. Tune in today to see if his glutes will stay activated for another round.
BEST OF REST: MLB: Miami Marlins at Chicago Cubs (11:10 a.m., ESPN2 (31)), San Francisco Giants at Washington Nationals (3 p.m., ESPN (30)), Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers (5 p.m., FSW (49)), San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals (5 p.m., Cox (96)), New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers (7 p.m., ESPN (30)).
SATURDAY
Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest (9 a.m., ESPN2 (31)): We don’t actually consider eating a sport, but there have been many times we’ve been more wiped out after a feast than a run and, like the Masters, it’s a tradition unlike any other. Not really, but it’s a tradition nonetheless celebrating its 100th year of competition. And competitive eaters do have a tremendous amount of intestinal fortitude.
Chestnut holds the world record for eating 69 Nathan’s hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes and is chomping at the bit to win his ninth straight title. However, hungry young challenger Matt Stonie has promised he’ll beat Chestnut, as he already has this year in competitions featuring Twinkies, poutine, pumpkin pie and gyros.
Las Vegan Miki Sudo will defend her women’s title against former champ Sonya Thomas. Sudo once ate 104 hard-boiled eggs in eight minutes — shattering Cool Hand Luke’s previous mark of 50 eggs in an hour.
BEST OF REST: MLB: San Francisco Giants at Washington Nationals (8 a.m., MLBN (314)), Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees (10 a.m., FS1 (329)), San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals (11 a.m., Cox (96)), New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers (4 p.m., Fox (5)), Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers (6 p.m., FSW (49); Wimbledon: third round (5 a.m., ESPN (30)).
SUNDAY
San Francisco Giants at Washington Nationals (5 p.m., ESPN (30)): Las Vegan Bryce Harper and the Nationals host the Giants in a rematch of last season’s National League Division Series won by San Francisco in four games en route to its third World Series title in five years.
BEST OF REST: MLB: San Diego Padres at St. Louis Cardinals (11 a.m., Cox (96)), Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers (4 p.m., FSW (49)); PGA Tour, The Greenbrier Classic, final round (10 a.m., TGC (339), noon, CBS (8)).
