Big inning lifts Grizzlies to win
March 28, 2008 - 9:00 pm
Spring Valley didn't exactly crush the baseball in the fifth inning Thursday.
But the Grizzlies got a little luck and took advantage of four Bonanza errors to score six runs on the way to a 7-4 win over visiting Bonanza.
"Against a guy like (Chasen) Shreve, you're not going to pound the ball, you've got to catch a few breaks and take advantage of anything they might give you," Spring Valley coach Mike Gomez said.
The Grizzlies got a sharp single from Connor McKenna but didn't hit many other balls that hard. One run scored on an infield single by Enzo Bello, and another came home after Bello got picked off first and got in a rundown, allowing McKenna to steal home.
Cody Collins hit a high chopper to third with a runner at second. Bonanza's 6-foot-4-inch third baseman, Kris Jensen, leaped but couldn't snag the chopper. Instead, he deflected the ball past shortstop Tomo Delp to allow another run to score.
Perry Martin hit a soft liner to center, but center fielder Kyle Hutchens couldn't hang on for a diving catch, allowing Collins to score. Martin scored from second after Hutchens didn't field the ball cleanly on a single by German Barajas, and Barajas scored on another error.
"A few balls fell in for us today," Gomez said. "Against that quality of a program and that good of a pitcher you take any win and run with it."
Spring Valley starter Tyler Anderson was dominant at times, allowing only three hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight, but his control problems led to two big hits by Bonanza.
With two outs in the second, Anderson hit Bryant and walked Hutchens. Heriberto Orozco then hit a two-run double to put the Bengals up 2-1.
The next inning, Anderson walked leadoff man Jordan Hanley, and one out later Delp launched a two-run homer to left for a 4-1 lead.
