Don’t look for Tiger on TV after second round of U.S. Open

As long as Chambers Bay is, the odds against Tiger Woods winning his 15th major on the Seattle-area golf course Sunday at the U.S. Open just got longer.

Woods, whom Las Vegas sports books listed at an all-time high of 60-1 odds to win before Thursday’s first round, blew up to a 10-over-par 80 on the challenging links-style layout. That left him stuck in 152nd place, better than only two players.

So the likelihood of Woods even being seen on your television screen Saturday or Sunday is virtually nil.

As Woods, 39, continues his desperate search for his prior form, 22-year-old Jordan Spieth is trying to become the first player since Tiger in 2002 to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year. Only five golfers have done it: Jack Nicklaus (1972), Arnold Palmer (1960), Ben Hogan (1953, 1951) and Craig Wood (1941).

Phil Mickelson, 45, also is chasing history, as he attempts to exorcise his demons at the U.S. Open — where “Lefty” has a record six runner-up finishes — and complete a career Grand Slam. Only five players have completed a career Slam: Woods in 2000, Nicklaus in 1966, Gary Player in 1965, Hogan in 1953 and Gene Sarazen in 1935.

The U.S. Open at Chambers Bay — which has the three longest par-4s (ranging from 534 to 546 yards) in tournament history — highlights a weekend of TV sports that includes the College World Series and Women’s World Cup.

The second round of the U.S. Open is today at 9 a.m. on Fox Sports 1 (329) and 5 p.m. on Fox (5), with Saturday’s third round and Sunday’s final round each airing at 11 a.m. on Fox (5).
