5 high school football games to watch this week

Here’s a look at some of Friday’s most interesting high school football games.

Foothill (3-3, 1-0 Southeast) at Basic (4-3, 1-1) — Though these teams are hovering around .500, a win in this game could put them in line to earn a home playoff berth. There should be plenty of emotion as the schools are separated by less than three miles, and generally play each other tough. They have split the last eight meetings, with five of those decided by eight points or fewer.

Spring Valley (5-2, 4-1 Sunset) at Sierra Vista (5-2, 3-2) — The Division I-A Sunset League is pretty close to the definition of chaos, and this game could make things even more interesting. Spring Valley is alone in first in the league, but four teams, including Sierra Vista, are tied for second. If the Mountain Lions win, it could put the league in a five-way tie for first place heading into the final week of the I-A regular season. And one of those teams won’t make the playoffs.

Mojave (4-3, 2-3 Sunset) at Clark (4-3, 3-2) — Mojave opened the season as one of the league favorites and was 4-0 before stumbling and needs a win just to keep its playoff hopes alive, as the Rattlers currently sit sixth in the league with two games remaining. The Chargers snapped a long playoff drought last season, but are in need of a win to have a shot at making it two in a row in the traffic jam that is the Sunset League.

Canyon Springs (4-2) at Green Valley (5-1) — This is the week’s only matchup of two ranked teams, and while it’s not a league game, it could be a preview of a Sunrise Region playoff game. The sixth-ranked Pioneers stumbled last week, dropping a 30-27 decision to Las Vegas a week after upsetting Liberty. The Gators are coming off a big Southeast League win over Coronado, and look to keep the momentum going in their homecoming game.

Agassi Prep (5-1, 4-0 Division III Southern) at The Meadows (5-2, 4-0) — This one should decide the Division III Southern League title. The Stars rarely throw the ball, but why would you with a pair of big-play running backs in Stephan Laushaul and Kobe Williams. The Mustangs are far more balanced, but can’t match the one-two punch of Laushaul and Williams. But running back Bryson Navallo is no slouch.
