Cowboys Tony Romo out for season with broken collarbone

The Dallas Cowboys confirmed Friday that quarterback Tony Romo suffered a hairline fracture in his left collarbone and will miss the rest of the season.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that the CT scan on Friday showed the fracture, but Romo will not need surgery.

Romo was injured on the final play of the third quarter in the Cowboys' 33-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Thanksgiving. X-rays were taken Thursday, but they were inconclusive.

According to ESPN sources, the scan showed a small crack in the healed portion of the distal fracture that Romo suffered in the Week 2 game on Sept. 20 win against the Philadelphia Eagles that caused him to miss seven games.

Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis sacked Romo and landed on the quarterback's left shoulder. Romo left the field favoring his left arm after remaining on the turf for several minutes.

The 35-year-old Romo said the feeling he had after being sacked by Davis was similar to what he felt when he broke the collarbone against the Eagles.

"Obviously it doesn't feel good," Romo said after Thursday's game. "It had a similar-type feeling. It was tough. I worked hard to come back and get acclimated to the game.

"I'm just very disappointed in not giving our team the chance to win today. They depend on me to go out there and perform at a certain level. When I let our team down, our coaches, our fan base — everybody — I have to live with that."

Romo completed 11 of 21 passes for 106 yards and three interceptions before getting hurt. Two of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns by the Panthers.

Romo had returned last Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, completing 18 of 28 passes for 227 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in a 24-14 win.

The Cowboys (3-8) will turn to Matt Cassel as their starter for the second time this season. Coming off the bench Thursday, Cassel completed 13 of 19 passes for 93 yards and had a 2-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys also have quarterbacks Kellen Moore and Jameill Showers on their practice squad.
