Gaels swat Sierra Vista ace

Sierra Vista's baseball team knew it had a tough task Monday, hosting a Bishop Gorman team that was 23-1 and ranked fourth in the nation by Baseball America.

So the Lions sent their hottest pitcher, left-hander Thomas Godfrey, to the mound.

It didn't matter.

Godfrey, who entered 4-0 with a 1.32 ERA in six starts, allowed three home runs and three other extra-base hits as the Gaels bashed Sierra Vista 11-1 to move into first place in the Southwest Division.

Brandon Garcia, Stephen Manthei and Jeff Malm homered off Godfrey. Rocky Brandonisio added a two-run homer for Gorman in the seventh.

"It was important to get off to a great start," Gorman coach Chris Sheff said. "Sierra Vista likes to play small ball and keep the game close, so we knew we had to get going early."

Gorman (24-1, 3-0 Southwest) scored four runs in the first and fourth innings to give starter Donn Roach plenty of cushion. Roach allowed six hits and threw only 83 pitches in his complete-game win.

Malm had three hits and four RBIs to lead Gorman's 10-hit attack. Seven Gorman starters had at least one hit.

Basic 11, Coronado 10 -- At Basic, Marcus Romero's two-run homer with two outs capped a six-run seventh inning that rallied the Wolves.

Del Sol 7, Foothill 6 -- At Del Sol, David Day drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Dragons over the Falcons.

Shadow Ridge 8, Cimarron-Memorial 7 -- At Shadow Ridge, Colton Simons scored on a two-out wild pitch to cap the Mustangs' four-run rally in the seventh inning.

The Spartans had taken a 7-4 lead with their own five-run burst in the top of the inning.

Kas Smith keyed Cimarron's rally with a three-run homer.

Arbor View 8, Centennial 5 -- At Arbor View, David McClure hit a two-run home run and a two-run single in the first two innings to spark the Aggies past Centennial.
