Hear Dock Ellis recall his LSD no-hitter in the 1970s — VIDEO

Dock Ellis was an All-Star and World Series champion who pitched parts of 12 seasons in the big leagues, but he’s probably best known for throwing a no-hitter on acid.

Friday marked the 45th anniversary of Ellis’ June 12, 1970 LSD no-hitter, during which the former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher walked eight batters in a 2-0 victory over the Padres at San Diego Stadium.

To hear about Ellis’ long, strange trip in his own words, check out the animated short film by James Blagden, “Dock Ellis and the LSD No-No.” It’s narrated by Ellis, who talked about the game in a National Public Radio interview in 2008. Ellis died later that same year at age 63, but not before talking about the time he took acid on a Friday, the day he was scheduled to pitch, thinking it was still Thursday.

“I’m high as a Georgia pine,” Ellis said in the film, adding that his catcher (Jerry May) had to wear tape on his fingers so Ellis could see his signals.

Happy anniversary, Dock. Wherever you are.
