Here are 5 possible names for a Las Vegas NHL team
There’s been a lot of talk about what the name of a Las Vegas National Hockey League expansion team should be … that is, if Las Vegas gets awarded an NHL team.
Some of that talk was from ESPN, where they asked readers for suggestions. They came up with “Bones” and “Flamingos.” What else? “Outlaws.”
In case you’ve forgotten, Las Vegas already has a team named the Outlaws — an arena football team.
In February, Bill Foley, the man leading the charge for a Las Vegas NHL expansion team, said he preferred Nevada in the name over Las Vegas. And then he quickly changed his mind.
We asked our readers for suggestions and there were a lot. Everything from “Las Vegas Midnight Steak and Eggs” to the “Las Vegas Resort Fees.”
If an NHL team expands in Las Vegas, those two names probably are not going to happen.
We narrowed the options down to a top 5 from the comments, and here’s what’s left:
- Aces
The Las Vegas Aces is the safest bet. It sounds smooth and it has a double meaning that most can get behind.
- Desert Devils
While this sounds more like a band name than a team name, it quietly addresses the conflict of having a hockey team in the middle of the desert.
- Rat Pack
Frank Sinatra hated the name, but it stuck. The group has a long and dense history in Las Vegas (“Ocean’s 11,” anyone?), fit for any team.
- Lights
Honestly, this just sounds really good. Plus, it’s obvious without being too obvious (like “Gamblers” or “Sinners” might be).
- Venom
Another one that rolls off the tongue, Las Vegas Venom would be a good reminder for everyone else that the team is serious.
