Inspired Legacy sweeps into final

Legacy’s boys volleyball team wasn’t going to let anyone get in the way of its yearlong goal of a state final appearance.

The Longhorns were fired up from the opening serve to the final point Tuesday, quickly spiking any hope Valley had.

“In our best wins this season, we came out really inspired,” Legacy coach Ray Lewis said. “We came out, we had fun and we played hard in that first set today. The score didn’t matter to us at that point. It was just about coming out and showing that we wanted it.”

Senior Tanner Compton finished with 20 kills to lead the host Longhorns to a 25-9, 25-23, 25-22 sweep of the Vikings in a Division I state semifinal. Legacy (27-3) will host Sunrise Region champion Las Vegas (21-5) at 7 p.m. today in the title match. The Wildcats defeated Shadow Ridge in the other semifinal.

“Since the beginning of the year, we talked about being in the state championship match, and every day we’ve just prepared for that,” Lewis said. “They’ve cheered, they’ve worked hard and they’ve done everything to be successful.”

Trent Compton and Tanner Compton began the first set with back-to-back kills, and Legacy opened an 8-2 lead.

“We came out so flat, and they just kept getting momentum and confidence,” Valley coach Matt Porter said. “They put a lot of pressure on us early, and it took us awhile before we got some rhythm. They were just building more and more confidence.”

Trent Compton had 13 kills and three digs, and Braden Liu recorded 40 assists and seven digs for the Longhorns.

Valley’s Jack Heavey had nine kills and four digs, and Matt Ballaro added nine kills and two aces. David Delaney recorded 10 digs, and Alex Sandoval dished 18 assists for the Vikings (18-9).

■ Las Vegas 3, Shadow Ridge 1 — Chris Kampshoff had 21 kills, 16 digs and two aces to help the Wildcats rally for a 24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 win over the Mustangs (13-7).

T.J. Esporas added 13 kills and 17 digs for Las Vegas. Shayne Marquez recorded 52 assists and 17 digs for the Wildcats.

Shadow Ridge’s Quinn Peterson had 20 kills, and Carter Johnson added seven kills and two blocks. Nathan Makaiwi dished out 37 assists, and A.J. Makaiwi had 22 digs for the Mustangs.

DIVISION I-A

Her team could have been viewed as an underdog Tuesday, but Clark’s boys volleyball coach Linda Silver never saw it that way. Neither did her players.

The Chargers, the No. 2 seed from the Sunset, took control early and survived a late scare on the way to a 25-22, 11-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-11 victory over Sunrise No. 1 seed Chaparral in the semifinals of the Division I-A state tournament at Desert Pines.

Henok Mucheye had 13 kills and two blocks to lead Clark (13-9), which will play Mojave (20-4) for the championship at 6 p.m. today. The Rattlers defeated Tech in the other semifinal.

“I don’t think it was an upset,” Silver said. “I knew if the boys played the way they could, they could beat some of the better teams this week.”

Silver said she was not surprised to see her team reach the championship match.

“I knew we had a pretty good chance, but it would depend on how the boys played,” she said. “They peaked early in the season and then slumped. I’m hoping they’re starting to pick it up again.”

Walt Benda helped Clark with eight kills and an ace. Daniel Diaz-Villa added eight kills.

Morgan led the Cowboys with 17 kills and an ace. Matt Sanger had eight kills, and Josiah Wagge had six kills and two blocks.

■ Mojave 3, Tech 1 — Matt Albinio had 26 kills to lead the Rattlers past the Roadrunners, 25-18, 26-24, 20-25, 26-24.

Tech offered plenty of resistance and threatened to take the match to a fifth set after rallying to tie the fourth game at 24. But Jordan Glenn put the Rattlers ahead with a kill, and Tech hit the final point into the net to end the match.

Jovan Carrazco had 41 assists for Mojave. Teammate Lorenzo Guerrero added 40 digs, and Glenn finished with 11 kills and four blocks.
