Marathon officials mull changes after Las Vegas shooting

Updated October 10, 2017 - 11:51 pm

Organizers of the Las Vegas Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon are reviewing logistics in the aftermath of the Oct. 1 mass shooting on the Strip.

The staging area for the race, scheduled for Nov. 11 and 12, and a prerace concert were to take place at Las Vegas Village, the site of the mass shooting that left 58 dead and almost 500 injured. The starting line for the marathon is near Mandalay Bay.

“We are currently in a deep dialogue with local officials and our partners at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department regarding the security measures for the event as well as the operational plan and protocols for the November marathon,” organizer Dan Cruz said.

Cruz said race officials have been in Las Vegas meeting with representatives from government, police and Strip resorts to devise strategy for the race. Officials are planning a remembrance for the shooting victims, he said.

“We are definitely determined to maintain the celebratory spirit of Las Vegas and return a sense of safety to the local community, runners and spectators at the event and (be) part of the healing process while at the same time honoring those who lost their lives and using this event to raise money to support the families of the victims,” Cruz said.
