New RJ sports editor Bradley familiar with Las Vegas
Bill Bradley knew Las Vegas well while he was growing up.
"Being I was a native of Phoenix, it was the only place my parents would go for vacation — besides San Diego," he said. "Even back then, I knew it was a fascinating and unique city."
He since has seen the country, but he is back in his native Southwest with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which recently named him sports editor.
Bradley comes to Las Vegas from the NFL, where he had been running the league's health and safety website for the past three years. It's been part of his foray into digital journalism that saw him previously create four websites, including one that used student journalists to cover a Division I college. He has previously worked as the sports editor of the Sacramento Bee and the Nashville Tennessean for five years each. Before that, he was deputy sports editor at the Arizona Republic for five years. He helped all three newsrooms transition into the world of digital media.
His background includes working as an editor and/or reporter in St. Paul, Minn; Hartford, Conn.; San Antonio; Lubbock, Texas; and Bellingham, Wash. He graduated from Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz., and also attended Arizona State.
Much of his family still lives in Phoenix, and he is excited to be part of the Review-Journal staff and return to his Southwest roots.
"I'm already fascinated by what makes Las Vegas tick in all ways," he said. "That fact that the city is in line for an NHL franchise within two years makes it all the more exciting.
"My main goal is to make the sports report — mobile, online and in print — as vibrant as the city."
Editor Mike Hengel said Bradley's experience will be important to the Review-Journal.
"We're very lucky to have Bill lead our sports department," Hengel said. "He has vast experience in covering sports on multiple platforms — mobile, desktop and print. Bill is someone who will work tirelessly to serve our existing readers while trying to bring in more."
