Skyhawks sniff out Lions’ fake

The problem with risky decisions is the consequences if they don't work out.

Sierra Vista learned that lesson Friday night when a fake punt was stuffed deep in its own territory late in the game and led to the decisive score.

Silverado quarterback Nicholas Underwood ran for his second touchdown on a 2-yard sneak with 1:41 remaining, lifting the Skyhawks to a 21-14 home victory over the Lions.

Sierra Vista faced fourth-and-6 from its own 19-yard line with 3:02 left. The Lions ran the option and pitched to Blake Marshall, who was lined up as the punter. He was tackled by a host of Skyhawks at the 15, setting up Underwood's winning score.

Adding insult to injury, the play wouldn't have counted even if the Lions had gotten the first down because of an illegal shift.

After Silverado (3-0) scored, Sierra Vista (0-2) failed to pick up a first down. That was the game-long theme for the Lions, who had trouble moving against the Skyhawks defense, gaining only 52 rushing yards.

Emir Lopez threw for 180 yards, but 73 came on a spectacular catch and run by Garland Lathan that tied the score at 7 late in the second quarter.

Silverado had no trouble running the ball, but four drives stalled on fourth downs inside the Sierra Vista 25.

Telvin McMillian ran for 183 yards on 26 carries, including a 47-yard touchdown for the Skyhawks. Kolton Villa added 105 yards on 10 carries.

Silverado opened leads of 7-0 and 14-7, but Sierra Vista answered each time.

The Skyhawks took the opening possession 60 yards on eight carries, with Underwood scoring on a 7-yard bootleg.

McMillian's 47-yard run in the third quarter gave Silverado another brief lead, but Lopez tied the score minutes later on a 2-yard sneak.

• Del Sol 35, Cheyenne 22 -- At Cheyenne, the ninth-ranked Dragons (2-0) showed off their new multi-dimensional attack, beating the third-ranked Desert Shields (0-1).

Del Sol quarterback Matt Burge (5-for-7, 79 yards) lofted a 20-yard TD toss to Timothy Lawson (three receptions, 62 yards) to open the scoring. Running back Bryan Grenier (15 carries, 70 yards) then ran 37 yards to make it 14-0.

Speedy Cheyenne back Marcus Sullivan (five carries, 113 yards) answered with an 80-yard run to lift the Desert Shields to within 14-8, but Del Sol's Derek Sanders picked off a Cheyenne pitchout just before halftime and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.

The teams exchanged two touchdowns each in the second half, with Burge setting up one by finding Lawson at the 1-yard line with a 30-yard throw as he was going down.

Desert Pines had a chance to take the lead early in the fourth, but a holding penalty wiped out a 3-yard touchdown run. A sack and a botched running play gave Palo Verde the ball on downs at its 34 and the Panthers drove for the win.

Kwame Banks scored on a 55-yard run in the first quarter for the Jaguars. Palo Verde's Tyrone Blake answered with a 1-yard TD run.

Palo Verde overcame three lost fumbles to pile up 292 rushing yards. Blake had 10 carries for 88 yards and Rockney Ricafrente 17 for 80.

The Mustangs rallied from a 31-20 deficit in the fourth, with Jones throwing a 40-yard TD pass to Chauncey Moore and the winner to Davis.
