Tennis, anyone? Wimbledon tops weekend TV choices
Stock up on some strawberries and cream and settle in for some breakfast at Wimbledon this weekend.
The men’s semifinals start at 5 a.m. today, with the men’s final set for 6 a.m. Sunday and the women’s final at 6 a.m. Saturday. All the action at the All England Club will be shown on ESPN (30).
The most compelling match is today’s second men’s semifinal, scheduled for 8 a.m., between No. 2 Roger Federer and No. 3 Andy Murray.
Federer, who has a 12-11 edge vs. Murray, hasn’t won a major since capturing his seventh Wimbledon and 17th major title in 2012, when he reduced Murray to tears after beating the Scot in the final.
A few months later, Murray beat Federer on Centre Court to claim the gold medal in the London Olympics. In 2013, Murray won Wimbledon to end Britain’s 77-year men’s singles drought.
Federer, trying to win another Wimbledon at age 33, is 9-0 in the semifinals at Wimbledon, losing only one set along the way.
The first men’s semifinal pits No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic against No. 21 Richard Gasquet, who pulled off a five-set comeback win over No. 4 Stan Wawrinka to spoil what would have been the first Wimbledon semifinals in 20 years to feature the top four men’s seeds.
Five-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova for the 17th straight time — 6-2, 6-4 — in Thursday’s semifinals and will play in her 25th Grand Slam final, facing 21-year-old Garbine Muguruza.
Williams will be gunning for her 21st major title and second “Serena Slam,” having won last year’s U.S. Open (the last major of the year) and the first two majors of 2015. She held all four majors at one time after winning the 2003 Australian Open.
