UNLV football coach Hauck gets raise, to make $700,000 a year
UNLV did more than give football coach Bobby Hauck a new three-year contract and raise.
The university, pending approval by the state Board of Regents, will pay him $700,000 annually. That is $200,000 higher than the previous deal, which included an annual salary of $350,000 with a yearly retention bonus of $150,000.
Hauck, 49, also receives a one-time payment of $150,000 on the new agreement on July 1, which he would have received under the prior arrangement.
The deal replaces the contract that was to go through next season. Hauck’s new agreement takes him through the 2016 season.
The regents will discuss the contract in a special meeting Jan. 24 at UNLV’s student union.
Hauck and athletic director Tina Kunzer-Murphy said they would withhold comment until the meeting.
In addition to the raise, Hauck has several annual incentives included in his new contract. Among them:
■ $100,000 for making a Bowl Championship Series-level game; $25,000 for appearing in the Las Vegas Bowl; $20,000 for a berth in the Poinsettia Bowl; $10,000 for playing in another bowl.
■ $15,000 for at least 11 victories; $12,500 for 10 wins; $10,000 for nine; $7,500 for eight; and $5,000 for seven.
■ $10,000 for finishing in the Top 25 coaches poll.
■ $10,000 for being named Mountain West Coach of the Year.
■ $5,000 if season-ticket sales reach 5,100 next season, 5,500 in 2015 or 6,000 in 2016.
Breaking down Hauck’s salary, he receives increases of $150,000 to $250,000 for base pay, of $150,000 to $225,000 for media appearances, and of $50,000 to $225,000 for public appearances.
Hauck’s job status was in serious question before last season. The Rebels had won two games each of their first three seasons under Hauck, and it was expected he needed to become bowl eligible to keep his job.
UNLV became bowl eligible for the first time since 2000, and the Rebels played in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Jan. 1, losing 36-14 to North Texas at Cotton Bowl Stadium.
They finished 7-6, their first winning season since going 8-5 13 years earlier.
An attempt to reach regents chairman Kevin Page for comment was unsuccessful.
