UNLV announces it has started fundraising for football practice facility

UNLV has raised nearly $6 million toward the building of an on-campus football facility, university president Len Jessup said at an ad hoc committee meeting on athletics for the Nevada System of Higher Education.

The facility has a proposed price tag between $25-$30 million and would be the centerpiece of UNLV football, including offices and meeting rooms and training table and weight room.

UNLV head coach Tony Sanchez, hired in December of 2014, said fundraising for the project didn’t begin until after last season and only recently took on an aggressive nature.

“I wasn’t going to walk in here and start asking people for money,” Sanchez said. “We need to earn that.”

Jessup told assembled regents a timetable has been set to raise enough additional funds by the fall so that construction on the facility — likely adjacent to the current practice fields — could begin in the spring.
