Austin Anderson’s infield single in the ninth inning scored Morgan Stotts with the winning run as the UNLV baseball team beat UC Riverside 5-4 on Tuesday at Wilson Stadium. Stotts had three hits and scored twice for the Rebels.
UNLV will need to win the Mountain West baseball tournament to advance to a regional for the second year in a row. The Rebels needed to win at least two of three from first-place San Diego State this weekend, but the Aztecs clinched the series with a 7-6 victory Saturday.
The UNLV men’s swimming and diving team finished in a tie for 26th place Saturday in the NCAA Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, the Rebels’ fifth top-30 finish in the past six seasons. UNLV’s scoring Saturday came from its 13th-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Former UNLV track and field star Amanda Bingson won the hammer throw Saturday for the second consecutive year in the USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Bingson, a 2012 London Olympian who attended Silverado High School, won the event with a toss of 246 feet, 3 inches, almost 11 feet better than runner-up Jessica Cosby. The winning throw was a record at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium.
Catcher Erik VanMeetren has been a vital reason UNLV’s pitchers have had a strong season. He is the rare college catcher who calls his team’s pitches.
The Air Force-UNLV baseball game Friday at Wilson Stadium was postponed because of rain and will be made up at noon today as part of a doubleheader. The game was the first postponed by rain at UNLV since March 4, 2005.

UNLV junior Aleksandra Josifoska was named the Mountain West women’s tennis player of the week. Josifoska, ranked 32nd in the nation in singles, went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles last week.
