As the second half of Mountain West play begins, two major factors have emerged giving strong indications as to how the rest of UNLV’s basketball season will play out.
UNLV
At age 4, he was 4 feet tall. Stephen Zimmerman Jr. never was the kind of kid to look down on others, though. He was raised to be grounded.
Some questioned Rashad Vaughn when he left UNLV after his injury-plagued freshman year. But his ability to create off the dribble and shoot excites NBA teams enamored by the smaller, faster style of the Golden State Warriors.
On a UNLV basketball team with five true freshmen, Chris Wood qualifies as a veteran. He is definitely playing the part of a more experienced leader on the floor, in contrast to last season.
In February, when Rashad Vaughn announced his commitment to UNLV, he mentioned next season’s schedule as an attraction. He was looking forward to playing against Duke, Arizona and Kansas. It was part of coach Dave Rice’s sales pitch.
It requires the assembly of numerous small, often oddly shaped, interlocking pieces. When the puzzle that is the Rebels of next season is finished, it’s a good bet Cody Doolin will have defined a fairly significant piece.
Everything around him was a blur, and Chris Wood was moving in slow motion. That’s how he felt in November, when he looked and played like a raw freshman. A few months later, he can laugh about it.
The obvious question: Was the basketball game lost by Boise State or won by UNLV?
There was a collective stunned look from Boise State’s players as they exited the court at the Thomas &Mack Center on Saturday.
The UNLV women’s basketball team suffered its worst loss of the season Saturday, falling to Boise State 79-49 in a Mountain West game at Boise, Idaho.
A group of UNLV players recently gathered to watch a Mountain West basketball game on TV, and something caught Khem Birch’s ear.
Midway through the first half, UNLV junior guard Bryce Dejean-Jones limped off the floor while clutching his right hamstring. That was the injury, and then came the insult.
Play hard. Play together. The request might seem overly simplistic for college basketball players owning a wealth of ability, but Dave Rice knows that continuity most often comes before prosperity.
Some people spend decades trying to find their right career path. Todd Simon decided on his as a kid and stuck with it.
In the swarm of opinion that followed a decision by Katin Reinhardt to transfer out of UNLV’s basketball program this week, an important point was lost: This is why the rule exists.
