UNLV football gets oral commitments from prep QB, DE

UNLV's busy offseason in recruiting continued Monday with quarterback Jack Smith committing to the Rebels for the 2016 class.

Smith (6 feet 1 inch, 185 pounds) passed for 4,052 yards the past two seasons at Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix. He also threw 46 touchdown passes to 21 interceptions.

Smith said he chose UNLV over Montana, Northern Arizona, Eastern Washington and Eastern Michigan.

He singled out coach Tony Sanchez, offensive coordinator Barney Cotton and quarterbacks coach Ron O'Dell as key reasons for choosing the Rebels.

"That's something that couldn't be overlooked for a player preparing for his future," Smith said. "People make a great program. It was an opportunity I couldn't turn down."

Also, defensive end Rodney Jones (6-4, 225) of Lincoln High in Stockton, Calif., committed to the Rebels, according to Rivals.com.

UNLV now has eight commitments for next year's recruiting class. Including three carry-over scholarships from last season, the Rebels have 11 of their 23-member class in place.
