Former UNLV football players, coaches on move
A handful of former UNLV football players and coaches have been in the news recently.
Here's a recap:
— The Seattle Seahawks signed former UNLV defensive end Josh Shirley to a futures contract. Shirley played at the University of Washington from 2011 to 2013 before transferring to UNLV for his final collegiate season in 2014. Shirley went undrafted but signed with the Oakland Raiders. He later signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and appeared in five games this season.
— The Philadelphia Eagles named former UNLV defensive coordinator Tim Hauck defensive backs and safeties coach. Hauck spent two seasons (2013-14) with the Rebels under coach Bobby Hauck, his brother.
— Former UNLV offensive line coach Jonathan Himebauch was named UNR's offensive line coach. A former USC player, Himebauch spent one season at UNLV in 2004 under coach John Robinson.
— The San Diego Chargers named former UNLV quarterback Shane Steichen quarterbacks coach after he spent the last two seasons as the their quality control coach on offense. Steichen previously spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons as a defensive assistant for the Chargers before becoming offensive quality control coach for the Cleveland Browns for one season. Steichen played four seasons for UNLV, from 2003 to 2006, and threw for 2,755 yards.
— Former UNLV offensive coordinator Todd Berry was named the new executive director of the American Football Coaches Association. Berry spent three seasons with the Rebels, from 2007 to 2009, before serving as head coach at Louisiana-Monroe for the last six seasons.
