Myles headlines big recruiting weekend for UNLV

Cornerback Jay’Onn Myles visited Baylor in December when the Bears beat Kansas State to claim a share of the Big 12 Conference championship.

It was a big weekend, one that could leave a lasting impression on a young football player.

But Myles was more impressed when he recently visited UNLV, and he committed to the Rebels on Sunday.

“I love the coaching staff, and I really connected with the secondary coach, J.D. (Williams),” Myles said. “The coaching staff is energetic. They have so much optimism. I love Coach (Tony) Sanchez and where he’s heading with the direction of the football program.”

Myles (5 feet 8 inches, 175 pounds), from Pierce College in Los Angeles, was one of four players to commit over the weekend. The Rebels also landed defensive tackle Salanoa-Alo Wiley (6-1, 260) of Kahuku (Hawaii) High School, defensive end Gabe McCoy (6-2, 220) of Pittsburg (Calif.) High, and wide receiver Javin White (6-3, 190) of McClymonds High in Oakland, Calif.

As for Myles, he’s a three-star prospect, according to Rivals.com, ESPN.com and 247sports.com.

He seriously considered Baylor and appreciated how early the Bears were in the process in recruiting Myles. But he said he established an even deeper connection with UNLV’s coaches, and the city of Las Vegas was important, too.

“If I chose Baylor, I don’t know if there’s a lot happening out there besides football,” Myles said. “I’m a city kid. I didn’t know if I wanted to go to a deserted part of Texas. Yeah, I’d be going for football, but football’s only a small part of things.”

Wily is a Scout.com and 247sports three-star prospect who previously committed to Hawaii.

McCoy made 25 tackles for loss, including 17½ sacks, last season at his Northern California high school.

White is a Rivals three-star prospect, who also was offered scholarships by New Mexico and New Mexico State, according to the website. He caught 17 passes for 407 yards last season, averaging 23.9 yards per catch, and scoring eight touchdowns.
