Turning Point: San Diego State scores quick, doesn’t look back against Rebels

UNLV's home finale was about as ugly as possible on the field Saturday against the visiting Aztecs.

San Diego State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, finding the endzone on their first drive, a 5-play 75-yard march that concluded with a 3-yard touchdown run from quarterback Maxwell Smith less than five minutes into the game.

The Aztecs added another touchdown in the opening quarter to take a 14-0 lead, and scored 17 in the second quarter to go up 31-0 at the half.

Aztec running back Donnel Pumphrey, a graduate of Canyon Springs High School in North Las Vegas, had 132 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first half alone. Three UNLV turnovers in the opening half didn't help the Rebels' cause, either.

UNLV found the end zone at the start of the third quarter, but were too far behind to threaten a comeback. San Diego State continued to pile it on in the second half, scoring 14 points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth quarter.

After a home season that looked promising at times, Saturday's blowout loss was perhaps more discouraging than expected for the Rebels.
