Utah school pounds Wildcats

Whenever humble pie is served on the football field at Las Vegas High School, the host Wildcats are usually the ones dishing it out.

But that certainly wasn't the case Friday night as visiting Pine View (Utah) dealt five-time defending Sunrise Region champion Las Vegas a big dose of humility in a 41-13 rout.

"We're extremely embarrassed at the outcome. We expected it to be a lot closer," Las Vegas coach Chris Faircloth said. "We tried to find out tonight how good we were, and obviously we found out we're not a very good football team."

Quarterback Justin Ence rushed for 103 yards and four touchdowns and also threw for 102 yards and a score to lead the Panthers (3-1), who finished second in Utah last season, when they also recorded a similar road romp over the Wildcats.

"We were under the belief we were probably better than we were last year," Faircloth said. "But we've got a long ways to go if we're going to make an impact this season."

Las Vegas (2-1) took a short-lived 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter when Reggie Bullock returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown.

But Tanner Wood ran the ensuing kickoff back 90 yards for a TD to even the score, and Pine View didn't trail again.

The Panthers scored on their next two possessions to take a 21-7 halftime lead and then scored on their first two possessions of the second half to extend their margin to 35-7.

Bullock led Las Vegas with 70 yards rushing on nine carries.

Villiami Hafoka paced the Panthers with 121 yards on 15 carries.

• Bishop Gorman 20, Dixie (Utah) 14 -- At Bishop Gorman, Jordan Welte scored on a 1-yard run on fourth down in overtime to lift the third-ranked Gaels over the Flyers.

Gorman (3-1) scored twice in the first quarter but needed Welte's second TD of the game to prevail in the extra period.

Dixie got the ball first in overtime, but Gorman's Charles Childers intercepted Mike Sharp's pass in the end zone.

John Huber, the third Gorman quarterback of the game, engineered the 10-yard winning drive, with Huber going the final 5 yards.

Welte and Huber provided the early scoring for Gorman. Welte ran 35 yards for a touchdown following a Dixie turnover. On the next series, Huber scored on a 56-yard run.

The Flyers closed the gap late in the second period when Ian Gatchell intercepted a John Therrell pass and raced 40 yards for the score.

Dixie, which didn't cross into Gaels territory until the third quarter, broke Gorman's streak of 14 straight quarters without allowing an offensive touchdown as Sharp scored on a 3-yard run. Sharp then found Jake Mills for the 2-point conversion, tying the game at 14 at 2:35 of the third period.

Gorman held the Flyers to 105 total yards, 58 on the ground.

Welte led the Gaels with 99 yards on 17 carries.

• Legacy 49, Clark 13 -- At Legacy, Deshae Edwards rushed seven times for 214 yards and four touchdowns in the first half to help the ninth-ranked Longhorns cruise past the Chargers.

Legacy (3-0) went ahead 6-0 on a 15-yard fumble recovery by Albert Wolmack on the game's second play.

Edwards, who sat out the second half, extended the Longhorns' first-quarter advantage to 21-0 with TD runs of 14 and 36 yards.

Clark (0-3) made the most of a Legacy fumble early in the second quarter, scoring on a 1-yard plunge by Andre Clay.

But Edwards' TD runs of 55 and 77 yards in the second quarter put the game out of reach for Legacy, which amassed 454 yards while holding the Chargers to 142.

Prince Oroke carried seven times for 118 yards and a second-half touchdown to help Legacy.

• Liberty 35, Durango 7 -- At Liberty, Ian Jackson rushed for two touchdowns as the Patriots racked up 432 yards in offense and rolled over the Trailblazers.

Jackson had scoring runs of 15 and 20 yards for Liberty (2-1). Michael Reveles rushed for 111 yards and a score on 18 carries to lead the Patriots, who ran for 369 yards.

Carlos Tautoto, Jackson and Jordan Kapeli had second-quarter scoring runs as the Patriots took a 21-0 halftime lead.

Liberty outgained Durango 185 yards to minus-10 in the first half, and the Trailblazers' offense had the ball for just 5:03 in the first two quarters.

The Patriots' defense had four sacks, including two by senior linebacker Sage Nua, and held Durango to 2 yards rushing.

Chase Roberts passed for 165 yards to lead Durango.

• Valley 53, Western 32 -- At Western, Kerwynn Williams scored on a 29-yard run late in the first quarter and three minutes later added an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown as the Vikings jumped to a 26-0 lead in a victory over the Warriors.

Williams finished with 157 yards on seven carries.

Western's Dante Warren caught a 2-yard TD pass from Terryon Marion on the final play of the first half for the Warriors' first points, and Giovan Grant opened the second half with a 73-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to make it 26-12.

But Valley soon put the game out of reach as Dominick Orr returned an interception 64 yards for a score, and Williams added a 47-yard touchdown run.

• Chaparral 35, Basic 28 -- At Chaparral, Isaiah Washington rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 25-yard scamper in the fourth quarter, as the Cowboys (1-2) beat the Wolves (2-1).

Trailing 28-21 entering the fourth quarter, Chaparral tied the game on Bre Onte Griffin's 9-yard keeper.

After a Wolves fumble, Washington appeared to be bottled up but reversed field and ran 25 yards for the winning score.

The Cowboys' defense stiffened in the second half, allowing 81 total yards, after giving up 219 in the first.

Chaparral's Pierre Jones finished with 85 yards on 14 carries.

Basic's Robby Faiman went 13-for-22 for 164 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 41 yards and a touchdown.

• Arbor View 28, Green Valley 10 -- At Arbor View, the Aggies' DeMarlo Virgil rushed for 141 yards and Taylor Wooten 119, and Arbor View (3-0) used a swarming defense to stifle the Gators.

The Aggies' double-wing offense racked up 239 yards on 26 carries in the first half and finished with 357.

Wooten scored on 31-yard scamper and a 1-yard plunge. Virgil scored on a 7-yard run and closed the scoring with a 5-yard pass from Austin Jackson in the fourth quarter.

• Foothill 35 Mojave 6 -- At Mojave, Algernon Sewell rushed for 219 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Falcons (2-1) past the Rattlers (0-2).

Sewell's back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter, including a 71-yarder, broke the game open.

Quarterback Aaron Dupin threw for a touchdown and ran for a score for Foothill, which outgained Mojave 406 yards to 122.

Quarterback Mike Montgomery scored the Rattlers' only TD, on a 2-yard run, and accounted for all of their yards, passing for 54 and running for 68. He also had an interception on defense.

• Sierra Vista 30, Coronado 27 -- At Sierra Vista, Akil Sharp had three first-half touchdowns, including an 82-yard kickoff return, and the Lions (1-2) defeated the Cougars (2-1).

David DeCarlo booted the game-winning 34-yard field goal with 6:24 left.

Coronado's Dane Cooper finished with 247 yards passing and three touchdowns, including two to Darren Smith, who caught seven passes for 107 yards.

But Sierra Vista's special teams proved to be the deciding factor.

Ivan Vela blocked a punt on the 10-yard line midway through the third quarter. The Lions (1-2) took just one play to capitalize, with quarterback Jeremy Green finding Darian Yahyavi in the end zone to put Sierra Vista ahead 27-19.

• Bonanza 21, Rancho 13 -- At Rancho, Antonio Beals' 2-yard touchdown run capped an eight-minute drive in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Bengals.

Beals had 66 of his game-high 203 rushing yards on the drive, which gave Bonanza (1-2) a 21-7 lead.

Quarterback James Cammack scored on 5-yard run to get Rancho (1-2) within 21-13, but kicker Tim Kennedy was stopped short on a 2-point conversion try.

Bonanza recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

• Eldorado 35, Desert Hills (Utah) 14 -- At Eldorado, Tone Gatewood had 241 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns as the Sundevils (1-2) ran past the Thunder (2-2).

Gatewood ran for 126 yards on 15 carries, and DeAndre Smith added 135 yards on 14 carries.

Will Plumb led Desert Hills with 114 yards on 17 carries.

• Spring Valley 52, Shadow Ridge 10 -- At Shadow Ridge, Jacques Adams rushed for 286 yards and four touchdowns as the No. 10 Grizzlies (2-0) routed the Mustangs (1-2).

Adams broke free for an 85-yard touchdown with 2:48 left in the second quarter and bolted 70 yards on the first play of the second half to put Spring Valley on top 18-0.

The senior, who had 166 yards rushing by halftime, also scored on runs of 7 and 4 yards.

Shadow Ridge's Zach Hill finished with 228 yards on 16 carries, including a 73-yard touchdown run.

• Cheyenne 56, Canyon Springs 12 -- At Canyon Springs, Marcus Sullivan rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries as the second-ranked Desert Shields (3-0) routed the Pioneers (0-2).

Sullivan had touchdown runs of 77 and 90 yards for Cheyenne, which scored on its first four possessions and finished with 446 yards rushing.

Canyon Springs' DeShaun Stewart had an 88-yard kick return for a touchdown in the second quarter. But Cheyenne's Terrence Brison returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards to score.

• Cimarron-Memorial 46, Desert Pines 6 -- At Cimarron-Memorial, Stephen Nixon had touchdown runs of 34, 65 and 64 yards to lead the Spartans to their first win.

Kenneth Banks returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, and James Poole returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in the third for Cimarron (1-2).

Nixon finished with 184 yards on 11 carries.

Derrick Shaw led Desert Pines (0-2) with 46 yards rushing on 13 carries.
