20 sixth-graders attacked by bees during P.E.

SAGINAW, Texas — At least 20 sixth-graders at a North Texas school have been treated for bee stings in an attack during an outdoor physical education class.

MedStar EMS reports four students were transported to hospitals following Tuesday’s incident at Highland Middle School in Saginaw, near Fort Worth.

A spokeswoman with the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw Independent School District says the bees were in an underground irrigation valve box. Kristin Courtney says students were playing soccer and must have stepped on the box, causing the bees to swarm.

Medstar EMS reports one boy had a significant reaction and required hospitalization. Three students had minor reactions but were taken to a hospital to be checked. The other 16 children were treated at the scene.

An exterminator was summoned to evaluate the hive and remove the bees.
