Baby attacked by dog was beaten allegedly by babysitter last year

Isaiah or Greenwood, Mo., has endured a lot since he was born on Feb. 2, 1014. In September, he suffered brain fractures. Prosecutors have accused his babysitter of throwing him violently across the room.

And on Saturday, his mother brought him with her to visit a friend in Greenwood. Angel Raya put the busy baby down on the floor so he could crawl.

Shannon Cottrell's dog named Leo then attacked Isaiah, whose jaw was crushed and his scalp was nearly ripped off. Children's Mercy Hospital surgeons treated him for more than 60 puncture wounds. Isaiah faces additional surgeries. His jaw will be wired shut for weeks and he will then be on a liquid diet.

His parents, Raya and Scott Francis, have been overwhelmed by the support. This was the second time that Leo had attacked someone and he was suppose to be kept away from children, according to those familiar with the case. Leo's owners had him euthanized by a vet on Sunday.

The Jackson County Prosecutors Office is considering charges against Leo's owner, Shannon Cottrell, and others. Greenwood police are recommending that felony charges be filed against Shannon Cottrell, which could include harboring a vicious dog and concealing evidence.

Shannon Cottrell and her husband were arrested by Greenwood police over the weekend.

Last year, Lee's Summit police cited Shannon Cottrell after Leo attacked someone. Lee's Summit authorities did a follow up check in February and found that Shannon Cottrell was in compliance with the city's dangerous dog ordinance.

However, Lee's Summit officials said the woman and the dog moved to Greenwood earlier this year and did not notify Lee's Summit officials as required. This would have allowed Lee's Summit authorities to alert their counterparts in Greenwood.

The Cottrells have declined comment.

The babysitter has denied the allegations and the case is pending. A hearing scheduled for this week was postponed because prosecutors said they needed more time to prepare.
